schism tracker

I'm the current developer and maintainer of schism tracker. I found out about it because I was a big fan of Impulse Tracker - a powerful "music tracker" for IBM PC compatibles running MS-DOS (or compatible) - and I saw efforts to reimplement it announced on freshmeat.

I immediately tried it out and was surprised to find it had gotten along as far as it had. Other efforts had either taken such liberties with the interface or mechanics that they were separate programs, and had no right to be considered "based on" Impulse Tracker. That is, the using of Impulse Tracker lended itself in no way to these new programs.

With schism, however, all that muscle memory that was built up working with Impulse Tracker over the years was immediately available and useful. I had no difficulties getting around- although much was still unimplemented.

I sent an email to chisel/Storlek about schism along with a few patches asking if I could help. His response was simply:

``You can take over. I'm joining the Army.''

(Liberally paraphrased)

And so over the next few days, I worked with chisel/Storlek to add schism tracker to sourceforge, add it to CVS, and set up the schism tracker project page.

sooner or later...

Eventually I started making binary builds for several platforms (including an absolutely terrible one), and people started becoming aware of it- either from #trax or #trax although others came about it the same way I did.

I added the MIDI support and polished a lot of things in schism, making it more accessible to people with keyboards that look nothing like IBM-PC keyboards, keyboards with other layouts, and implemented some entirely new features- all while keeping faithful to the muscle memory people created with Impulse Tracker.

schism development is still active, and I highly recommend that people either get the CVS version directly from sourceforge, or from my binary builds that I make very frequently.

I also recommend they take a look at the message forum that chisel/Storlek put together, and let me know what they think.
